這張專輯在最近終於入手, 之前找了好久都買不到 XD與其說我是先認識billie 的聲音, 不如說我是先認識她的悲劇故事在我去買他的專輯來聽之前其實我已經聽過了她的幾首作品像是 the man I love 、gloomy sunday 之類的, 但我必須說我並沒有非常喜歡她的聲音, 之後一陣子我在書店發現了本關於她的自傳還有其他關於她的介紹, 才讓我對於她的悲劇人生開始感到興趣
不過也有某部分的原因是因為我在聽了有billie接班人之稱的Madeleine Peyroux 的作品後, 覺得很喜歡尤其是第二張<<careless love>> 之中翻唱bilie 的I'll look around 更是我非常喜愛的一曲讓我重新燃起想去聽billie 作品的欲望
然而billie 的作品那麼多, 要從哪張入們才好呢?
我本來是想找有沒有現場演出的專輯的
因為在我看過的介紹裡幾乎大家都說聽過Lady Day的現場演出很少有能不感動甚至落淚的
但因為她的現場錄音作品本來就很稀有, 就算找到也只是剩個圖片, 早已銷售一空
但我又最討厭精選(曲目少少), 完整的錄音全部的又太貴(動輒要幾千塊)
所以最後在我看過很多之後我決定買這張 Lady In Satin, 據說這張是她自己最喜歡的一張由她自己所灌錄的專輯
在這張專輯完成後17個月她就不幸在44歲時過世了
這張專輯裡, billie 的聲音狀況已大不如前, 取而代之的是她在歷盡人事滄桑, 反映出飽受折麼的沙啞嗓音
儘管聲音的狀況很差, 但在這張專輯裡卻也因此流露出了billie 最真的情感
這些歌基本上就是billie 人生的寫照像Ray Ellis 在專輯內頁裡就講到
I would say that the most emotional moment was her listening to the playback of "I'm a Fool to Want You." There were tears in her eyes...
他說billie 基本上只是在唱出她心裡最最真實的情緒, 讀奏樂手則是在共鳴她的痛苦
Ray Ellis 也誠實的說出他在一開始初聽成品, 對於billie 的表現感到不高興, 但那是因為他只注意音樂層面, 而不是情感層面, 在之後終於了解她著實表現的太好了
After we finished the album I went into the control room and listened to all the takes. I must admit I was unhappy with her performance, but I was just listening musically instead of emotionally. It wasn't until I heard the final mix a few weeks later that I realized how great her performance really was.

Ray Ellis 是美國知名的錄音製作人、編曲、樂團指揮, 這張專輯便是billie 主動要求要和他合作, Ray Ellis在這個作品裡負責錄音、編曲及指揮著40人制的管絃樂團, 所以除了billie 讓人感動肺腑的歌聲外, 優美的管絃音樂也是不得忽略的, 尤其是顫音, 我覺得使用的滿頻繁的, 但它的卻也到達了它揪人心弦的目的, 感人的程度自然不在話下
